"Is Google making us stupid"

Analysis on, “Is Google Making Us Stupid?”

"We are not only what we read... We are how we read," said Tufts University Psychologist Maryanne Wolf. This is very true to society and how the world reads and writes now days. In the essay, "Is Google Making us Stupid?" written by Nicolas Carr it brought up some very good points that I never would have thought to realize in this day in age. There are so many distractions that are caused while reading, whether it is a song that pops into your head or something that popped up on the internet earlier or maybe something that happened earlier in the day. There are so many ways to get out of focus while trying to read and comprehend what you're reading. Carr even mentioned that when he talked to his friends about reading, while most being literary types, many of his friends said they were having similar troubles with reading also. This was also said when Carr states, "The deep reading that used to come naturally has become a struggle." The internet has actually affected how we as human beings process information.

Google is one of the greatest tools that has ever been invented. In my opinion I think Google, giving us instant access to any information we put in the search engine, is overall making us smarter. Carr isn’t arguing that if google is making us more or less intelligent, he is arguing the point that google changes our minds and the way we think. Constantly searching things and browsing the web can affect us and make our minds work differently but it is definitely not making us less intelligent. Carr ends off with the line that, “… as we come to rely on computers to mediate our understanding of the world, it is our own intelligence that flattens into artificial intelligence.
